Adult/Child Irreverence
by Kimmy McCann

Downtown Los Angeles has been swelling with underground activity by various artist initiated art events. The events, like those put on by Cannibal Flower, Zone 9 Art Events, and Burning Brush, have produced a running theme of artwork that can only be called, "Adult/Child Irreverence."
The style seems to be part of a movement in which historical symbolism of post-modern culture is re-visited and examined for accuracy. Adult artists seem to be creating works of art reflecting life in the Never-Never land that makes up most of Southern California lifestyle. Their imagery is based on post-pop influences, street art, and skate-surf cultures. Mixed-medium and multi-usage of media are usually present. However, when the influence of life moments created with age, such as finances, politics and sex, have been experienced, the perspective of innocence can never be fully recovered.
Thousands are consistantly showing up (and in some instances, paying) to view un-established, unknown, and emerging artists. Newspapers and other periodicals are writing stories about a scene that follows little rules of taste and culture.
These events, and sprouting galleries are the "wrong" galleries and exhibits. People have rightfully criticized most of the work being shown, but still, the scene is growing. Artwork is being sold. Names are getting known.
Has LA, the cultural wasteland of the past, finally come into an identity not created by its past parody to NY style?
Hmm. Only time, and the Critics, will tell.
